What is vaporization?

Vaporization involves heating oils or herbs by using a stream of hot air. It is known as smokeless inhalation, which allows the active substances to be released, depending on their vaporization temperature. Since the process of vaporization does not involve combustion but rather intense heating of the dry herb or oil, the patient or user does not introduce harmful smoke into their body – which is the main carrier of tar substances and causes irritation of the throat and other internal organs (such as lungs or bronchi).

Is vaporization healthier than smoking?

The vapor generated by a vaporizer during the heating of dry herb or oils is devoid of tar substances – which are hazards to human health. Of course, if vaporization is conducted at too high a temperature, it may lead to the burning of the herb – which, in turn, will release tar substances. Therefore, it is important to familiarize yourself with information on effective, efficient, and safe vaporization.

So, answering the question, is vaporization healthier than smoking, the answer is: yes. It is a much healthier alternative that is more benign to the human body than smoking.

Vaporization efficiency

During the combustion process, up to 25% of active chemical compounds are lost – including the crucial terpenes, which are the most important substance in medical cannabis used in therapies for various health ailments. Terpenes are mostly released at temperatures between 100 to 200 degrees Celsius, whereas the temperature of combustion reaches up to 2000 degrees Celsius. This means that many of the substances will have oxidized even before they enter the body.

The process of convection or conduction used in vaporizers eliminates the need for direct contact of the dry herb with the heat source. This makes it easier to monitor, regulate, and maintain the appropriate heating temperature of the dry herb, adjusting it (increasing or reducing) according to needs or expectations.

How to vaporize dry herb? Step-by-step instructions

Step 1 – Read the vaporizer’s user manual!

The way vaporizers are used can vary in terms of operation, but usually, it’s an intuitive process. However, it’s worth learning how to use your specific device – both in terms of placing the right amount of dry herb in the chamber and adjusting the settings.

Remember the first battery charge! Most vaporizers are now equipped with lithium-ion batteries without a memory effect, but considering the time between production and purchase, there’s a high probability that the battery will be discharged – meaning your device won’t be ready to use right after unpacking.

Step 2 – Ensure the vaporizer is clean before the first use!

Cleaning your vaporizer before its first use is essential for your safety. This way, you will remove any remnants from the production process – including liquids, lubricants, and residues present in the machines on the production line.

Use isopropyl alcohol for this purpose. Pay special attention to the heating chamber, mouthpiece, and the entire vapor path.

After cleaning the vaporizer with isopropyl alcohol, perform a so-called Burn-off to eliminate any remaining traces of isopropyl alcohol.

To do a Burn-off, turn on the vaporizer with an empty chamber and leave it for one full cycle at the highest available temperature. Wait until it turns off and cools down. That’s it. Your device is ready for its first use.

Step 3 – Prepare the dry herb

The most convenient way to grind the dry herb is using a special grinder. However, this is not always the best method. Experts often recommend breaking the herb with fingers or using scissors. This is due to the high resin content of the cannabis herb, which leads to trichomes sticking in the grinder. Nonetheless, don’t go to extremes, so you can grind the herb in any way that is convenient for you.

Step 4 – Place the dry herb in the chamber

The amount of dry herb used depends on your vaporizer model – both in terms of chamber capacity and type (conduction/convection/hybrid). Remember, too much or too little dry herb can prevent vaporization. So, if your tolerance is too low to use pure cannabis, consider using available herbal fillers that can maximize the efficiency of your therapy.

Step 5 – Turn on the vaporizer and start vaporizing

Vaporization should start at the lowest temperature recommended for the particular herbal blend. For cannabis, this could be in the range of 150-160 degrees Celsius. Gradually increase the temperature by 10 degrees Celsius with each session – until you reach 200 degrees. However, do not exceed this temperature, as it is the maximum for all active substances contained in M.M.

Step 6 – Clean the vaporizer after vaporization

Turn off the device and after it has cooled down, proceed to cleaning. This is particularly important for your vaporizer’s performance, as many residues and remnants remain after vaporizing the dry herb. Do not allow these to dry and become almost impossible to remove – especially on the screen under the mouthpiece and in the chamber where you place the dry herb.

What herbs are worth vaporizing?

Cannabis is not the only herb that can be vaporized. The list of herbs that have a positive effect on the body when heated includes such alternatives as:

  • Ribwort Plantain (Plantago lanceolata);
  • Common Hops (Humulus lupulus);
  • St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum);
  • Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus obliqua);
  • Purple Coneflower [Echinacea] (Echinacea purpurea);
  • Catnip (Nepeta cataria);
  • Valerian (Valeriana officinalis);
  • Common Yarrow (Achillea millefolium);
  • Narrow-leaved Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia);
  • Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis);
  • Peppermint (Mentha piperita);
  • Common Sage (Salvia officinalis).

It’s also worth noting that they can also serve as an ideal filling for the vaporizer chamber in therapy using M.M. They perfectly complement the effects of cannabis, maximizing its efficacy in reducing health ailments.

Types and characteristics of vaporizers

There are two types of vaporizers: convection and conduction. Of course, hybrid versions that combine the benefits of both can also be found on the market, but before making a purchase decision, it is worth knowing the basic solutions.

Conduction vaporizers work on the principle of direct contact of the herbs with the heated surface. The vaporizer’s heaters heat the chamber from the outside, which is filled with dry herb on the inside. Meanwhile, convection vaporizers have a completely different operating scheme. They produce a hot stream of air that is pushed through the herbs — thus releasing active substances. Hybrid devices heat the dry herb in both ways, ensuring the highest level of efficiency and performance.
