Medical marijuana

What is it?

What is worth knowing?

Medical marijuana, or medicinal marijuana, is made from dried cannabis seeds (a.k.a. fibrous hemp Cannabis Sativa L.). Thanks to its high content of active substances, cannabinoids, when used properly it has a beneficial effect on the human body. It exhibits analgesic, sedative and calming effects. It can be used in the treatment of mental disorders (depression, anxiety, Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome), as well as conditions such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease.

Medical marijuana has become famous primarily for its pain-relieving properties. It is considered one of the most effective treatments for chronic pain, that is, pain lasting longer than 3 months. Marijuana owes its analgesic effects to the cannabinoids THC and CBD. They affect the CB1 and CB2 receptors located in the brain. The CB1 receptor is responsible for the sensation of pain, while CB2 can stimulate the immune system, thus fighting inflammation.

Many patients confirm that medical marijuana helps relieve symptoms of stress and anxiety. In addition, some studies suggest that marijuana can help relieve symptoms of insomnia, especially in people with pain and chronic illnesses. A chemical compound from marijuana known as THC can affect sleep, reducing the time it takes to fall asleep and lengthening the duration of the NREM sleep phase, which often contributes to improved sleep quality.

Cannabinoids in the fight against cancer: how can medical marijuana support oncological therapy?

In recent years, it has become increasingly common to hear about the use of medical marijuana in the treatment of various conditions. Undoubtedly, one of the most important areas where medical marijuana can bring tangible benefits is in cancer treatment. Medical cannabis can prove indispensable in alleviating the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Patients who have undergone these treatments often suffer from nausea, vomiting, pain and loss of appetite. Medical marijuana treatment can help negate these symptoms, making patients’ lives more comfortable. One of the key areas where medical marijuana could bring hope is its potential role in inhibiting cancer growth. Research has shown that cannabinoids can affect the biological processes responsible for the development of cancer cells, including breast cancer. In particular, inhibition of angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels), which hinders the growth of tumors, and induction of apoptosis (cell death) in the case of cancer cells have been observed. Work is also underway on the effect of cannabinoids on lymphoma cells. However, it should be noted that medical marijuana treatment is not suitable for every patient. For people with a predisposition to mental disorders such as schizophrenia or bipolar affective disorder, the use of medical marijuana can be risky. In addition, in some cases cannabinoids can affect the metabolism of other drugs, which can lead to their reduced effectiveness. Nonetheless, the use of medical marijuana to treat cancer is becoming increasingly common, and the number of scientific studies in this field is growing. Many countries around the world are enacting legislation to allow the use of marijuana in medicine, which indicates a growing recognition of its therapeutic potential. Nowadays, medical marijuana is considered a valuable complement to traditional therapies, which can help improve the quality of life of cancer patients.
